Swedish fashion company Gina Tricot recently released its 2019 sustainability report. Since 2014, it has regularly published sustainability reports. The Sustainability Team Gina Tricot assessed the sustainability perspective in 2019 as the most memorable year.

According to the fashion giant, “Sustainability issues are very close to our heart, and in this report we want to talk to you about our efforts, challenges, and journey to age. more sustainable pages. We invite you to look back at our world and learn about our sustainability goals. There is only one way to go - Sustainable development ”.

Transparent supply chain

Gina Tricot is committed and dedicated to building complete transparency throughout its supply chain through to raw materials. According to the company, they are completely transparent in their supply chain from the sewing unit to the fabric manufacturer. They also choose some of their yarn manufacturers, and even nominate more suppliers such as labels, packages and sewing threads to maintain better control. Furthermore, the company is currently mapping cotton, viscose and leather supply chains.

Sustainability goals

According to the report, by 2028, to develop a fashion brand with a sustainable goal, the company will only provide products made from more environmentally sustainable materials, i.e., recyclable materials, organic or innovative materials. The company will focus on its entire supply chain so that the products are manufactured in a more sustainable way. The company has other sustainability commitments, which are:

  • Products will be designed for a circular economy, for reuse, and ultimately recycling.
  • Products will be transported in a sustainable way with low carbon emissions and using non-fossil fuel alternatives.
  • Products will be sold in a sustainable channel. Online stores and channels have furniture, packaging, sustainable electricity and waste control.

Reusable fashion

Most of the company's suppliers around the world have stockpiles of obsolete items from old collections. In the fall of 2019, the company launched a product in partnership with Siri Sikkim Wikman's Aéryne brand, made entirely of leftover fabric. The collections are made by women and for women, with a strong femininity. 10% of the sale price of each collection has been donated to UN Women, Sweden.

“Collections were a challenge for us in many ways and we had to rethink our design process. Instead of sending our requests to our suppliers, we start by asking our suppliers what is left, ”said Monika Mellin, Design Director.

The second passion

An important step is to collect the fabric to participate in recycling or reuse and return it to the production process as a new raw material when the Gina Tricot stores have run out or are no longer in demand. In line with their announced fashion commitment, they are striving to increase their clothing collection by 50% by 2020 through various in-store activities.

In 2019, they collect 50 tons, which is equivalent to 2018. Gathering clothes for reuse or recycling is an important step in extending the shelf life of a product or turning it into a new raw material. in a never ending loop.

Sustainable materials

In 2019, 57% of the company's products are made from more sustainable materials. The company expects future challenges and will reach 100% by 2028.

Pay attention to planet protection issues

Climate change is our biggest challenge. All of our manufacturing, shipping, travel and opportunities are related to emissions and affect the size of the world's carbon emissions.

“We have updated our sustainability commitments, as part of our climate strategy, we will take a closer look at our suppliers' wet treatment processes. We will start with measuring the impact of climate change and continue to take steps to mitigate it, ”said Global Manufacturing and Sustainability Director Emma Garrote.

Gina Tricot is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by adapting a minimum heat path of 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Inspire customers to become more sustainable

To deal with overproduction, since 2017, the company has been at the forefront in reducing overproduction and the number of products produced. From a financial standpoint, this reduces the number of garments sold at a reduced price. From a sustainability standpoint, redundancy fundamentally reduces production. The company claims that its products are made from more sustainable materials and processes, resulting in high quality products and increased margins at the same time.
