Import of raw materials for production increased sharply
On the afternoon of May 17, the General Department of Customs announced import and export data for the past 4 months. In which, for the textile and garment and footwear industries, Vietnam has spent more than $2.63 billion on importing raw materials and accessories, an increase of more than $215 million compared to March 2022. Imported materials include cotton, textile fibers, fabrics of all kinds, raw materials for textiles, garments, leather, shoes...
Accumulated in the first 4 months of 2022, imports of raw materials and accessories for the textile, apparel and footwear industry reached US$9.44 billion, up 12.4% (equivalent to an increase of US$1.04 billion) over the same period last year. .
The most imported items were fabrics of all kinds with more than 5.05 billion USD, up 15.1%, besides, cotton of all kinds also reached 1.22 billion USD, up 22.3% over the same period last year. last year. Raw materials for textiles, apparel and footwear reached US$2.27 billion, up 6.3% and textile fibers of all kinds reached US$903 million, up 3.4% over the same period last year.
Import of raw materials and accessories increased sharply because the current textile and garment enterprises have had a surge in export orders, many textile and garment enterprises have had orders until the end of the third quarter, even have business orders for the whole year 2022.
Imported goods mainly from China
From the above results, it can be seen that the domestic textile and garment manufacturing industry is still dependent on imported raw materials and accessories to a large extent. Notably, according to businesses, the group of raw materials and accessories for the textile, garment and footwear industries imported into Vietnam mainly originate from China, accounting for about 50%, and increasing by double digits compared to the previous year. with the same period last year.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, China is an important market for both export and import activities of Vietnam. According to statistics in 2021, China is the largest import market of Vietnam with a turnover recorded at 109.9 billion USD. Especially, this is also a large supply market for input materials for Vietnam's production, especially for electronic components, machinery parts, fabrics and chemicals.
In particular, the recent Covid-19 outbreak in China has also revealed its limitations when it comes to dependence on foreign markets in the import of raw materials. Many textile and garment enterprises are like "sitting on the fire" because their suppliers of raw materials and accessories cannot deliver, affecting 20-30% of the industry's production capacity.
In order to produce fabrics, there is a textile dyeing industry, but this is an industry that requires technology and large capital. Not to mention, textile and dyeing enterprises also face barriers from localities due to concerns about the risk of environmental pollution.
Because of the large investment costs, this is also one of the difficulties in developing supporting industries for the textile and garment industry.
Facing difficult situations in the industry, domestic textile and garment and footwear enterprises are discussing solutions to develop in the direction of specialization and strengthen linkages between enterprises to form clusters of industry links and chains. value to the industry.
According to data from the General Department of Customs, in the first quarter of 2022, footwear export turnover will reach $5.288 billion, up 10.1% over the same period in 2021. The leather and footwear industry expects to reach the export milestone of $20 billion. in 2022, an increase of 12.7% compared to 2021.
To achieve this goal, businesses in the industry need to pay attention to ensure raw materials for production, because at present, a large amount of raw materials for the industry still have to be imported. Besides, some stages of work still have to hire foreign high-tech workers...
In the field of supporting industries for the leather and footwear industry, Vietnam aims to develop materials and accessories for the leather and footwear industry, meeting the target that by 2025, the domestic supply rate of the leather and footwear industry will be the same. leather and footwear reached 75-80%, with high value-added products for export production. To achieve this goal, much remains to be done and to attract investment in the production of raw materials.
