The Dior Cruise 2021 collection takes viewers back to Puglia's hometown of Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri and has a journey to discover the crafting village here.
The Dior train, after passing through historic cities such as Marrakesh, Cuba, (or Calabasas) stopped in the beautiful Puglia region of Italy, where the main inspiration for BST Cruise 2021. Visual artist Marinella Senatore brings to an impressive performance space with light technology. The event was broadcast live, then posted on its YouTube channel to ensure the safety of the crew as well as the guests.

Puglia is important to Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri because it is her father's hometown and a place where she used to go to her summer vacation as a child. Italy was once at the center of the COVID-19 outbreak, so Dior's bringing back the "normal" life back to the city meant a new start. According to Maria, that is also the meaning of fashion in the period of social isolation: Fashion brings people closer together.
“During this period, I want to find a new approach that is appropriate for the collective scale. Despite the disadvantages of distance, bringing a different perspective to everyday life adds to us great strength and imagination, ”said Maria Grazia Chiuri in the press release.

Puglia's history and legacies appear throughout the collection. Puglia is known as a picturesque city and home to a rich history of handicrafts. Chiffon and lace headscarf reminds the image of beautiful women in the garden. Wheat stalk motifs associated with the agriculture here appear much on the design of long robes and chiffon dresses.

The floral and butterfly motif on the green background evokes the image of green steppe and field of flowers.
In particular, the traditional embroidery technique was inherited by Maria Grazia Chiuri and kept in many tassel long skirt designs. Tombolo, a popular lace style popular in Southern Italy in the 15th century, is faithfully recreated in collaboration with artisan Marilena Sparasci, one of the last craftsmen to practice and teach the technique.

Maria Grazia Chiuri hopes the collection will bring back the famous Tombolo lace technique of Southern Italy back to modern fashion.
